Even in an international context, the Emscher Landscape Park represents the most significant effort to date to use landscape architecture to revitalize a former industrial region. It is remarkable for the sheer variety of its built projects as well as the caliber of its participants, including Peter Latz, Norman Foster, Jörg Schlaich, Frei Otto, Rem Koolhaas, Henri Bava, Michel Desvigne, Richard Serra, and others. The roughly thirty most important parks, gardens, landmarks, installations, bridges, reclamation projects, etc. have been newly photographed, expertly described, and contextualized. With its 450 km², the Emscher Landscape Park encompasses a substantial portion of the Ruhr district, which will be showcased as European Capital of Culture in 2010.
