Résumé
"This book fills a void. Most books address only portions of the embedded problem. As the title indicates, this one is uniquely comprehensive. I consider it a must-read."
Jack Ganssle, embedded author, lecturer, consultant
Embedded systems design has become an established engineering discipline, but it is a discipline with far-ranging and widely differing techniques and approaches. This readable and practical text provides a much-needed "big picture" of embedded systems architecture for engineering students and embedded systems professionals. Written by an experienced embedded systems designer, it clarifies all concepts with references to specific embedded technology as it exists in the industry today, including many diagrams and applicable computer code. The text introduces a useful model as a means for understanding any embedded system design, no matter how complex, and shows how the relevant standards apply to and define a system's components.
Among the topics covered in detail are:
- hardware components, including processors, memory, buses, and I/O
- applicable standards grouped by system application
- system software, including device drivers and operating systems
- use of assembly language and high-level languages such as C and Java
- interfacing and networking
- case studies of embedded designs from a variety of fields
The book is well-suited for undergraduate embedded systems courses in electronics/electrical engineering and engineering technology departments in universities and colleges, for corporate training of employees, and for professional reference. The CD-ROM accompanying the text contains source code for the design examples and numerous design tools useful to both students and professionals.
