Chinese Dress

From the Qing Dynasty to the Present

Valery Garrett

240 pages, parution le 15/01/2008

This book examines the extraordinary range of Chinese dress, from court and formal costumes through to the working attire of the lower classes and the latest fashions of New China. Against a background of historical, cultural, and social change, the author skilfully weaves the story of Chinese dress in all its variations - elaborately embroidered robes, military uniforms, children's dress, wedding and funeral attire, working clothes, and Mao-inspired fashion - and accompanying accessories. The first four chapters cover attire worn during the Qing dynasty for the emperors and their consorts as well as the mandarins, merchants, and their womenfolk, both Manchu and Chinese. The following four chapters pay particular attention to the dramatic changes in clothing which took place in China in the twentieth century, including rural dress and children's wear, from the Republican period through to dress in New China from 1949 to the present day. The book is illustrated with over 500 images of garments and accessories from museum and private collections as well as unpublished or little-known archival photos and printed materials. For fashion inspiration and accurate representation, the book is an essential reference for costume historians, fashion designers, and collectors as well as all lovers of beautiful clothes.
