Résumé

What can be done to create a mental and physical connection of the HafenCity and the river Elbe to the city of Hamburg and its inhabitants? This was the guiding idea of an international competition of 15 schools of architecture of three continents. The responsibles for the town planning of Hamburg and especially the HafenCity are convinced that the city of Hamburg has to abandon a part of its old attractive harbour and must give up the partly reserved attitude concerning the river Elbe.

Consequently initiated by the architect and author professor Dr. Peter Stiirzebecher, Hamburg faces new ideas that have officially opened a reflection among the students and their professors about the new centre of the HafenCity and, in addition, about the second motorway bridge crossing the harbour south of the Elbe. The resultats of the competition being presented close to the official model of the whole HafenCity in October 2003, results that are seen by thousands, have incited political courage and a certain destabilisation giving room for critical questions concerning the actual planning. At any rate the ideas have shocked in a positive way.

How can HafenCity, Speicherstadt and the Magdeburger Hafen be connected and how can it incite the city, that before rarely looked at its riparian line, to orientate to the harbour? The young architects, muscled with competent professors in their schools, gave answers: destroying, penetrating, drying, filling up, transforming, building on or in the water, playing with the tides, widening the bridges, creating a large number of crossings and above all this interconnections giving room for activities and human relations.
