Résumé

We are pleased to present the first issue of the Journal of Language and Computation (L&Q, Logic, Grammar and Language. The journal responds to the need for a forum in which researchers working at the interface of logic, formal grammar, and computational linguistics can share their research with other members of this rapidly growing research community. The papers in this issue reflect several key developments and concerns in formal and computational linguistics. Both Paul Dekker and Jan van Eijck contribute to the development of dynamic semantic approaches to anaphora.
Dekker's article applies dynamic binding to a variety of intersentential anaphoric relations. Van Eijck presents an axiomatization of several well known dynamic logics that model anaphora in terms of change in information state. Esther König, and Shuly Wintner and Nissim Francez describe frameworks for implementing typed feature structure grammar formalisms. König's LexGram is a parsimonious system for encoding lexicalist grammars that employs a feature inheritance hierarchy. Wintner and Francez construct an abstract machine for compiling feature structure grammars into executable code which can be used for either parsing or generation-. Finally, Hans-Joerg Tiede investigates the formal properties of the set of generalized quantifiers that can be learned on the basis of a finite number of cases where a generalized quantifier relation holds for its arguments. Taken together, these papers contribute to the articulation of formal grammars for natural language and their computational implementation.

L&C will sustain an open environment in which high quality papers addressing relevant issues from alternative theoretical perspectives are welcome. L&C is published by Hermes Science Publishing and is sponsored by the European Forum for Logic, Language, and Information (FoLLI). Please send any comments directly to the editors through our web site. We would very much like to hear your responses to the Journal.
