Résumé

This book is written for the web designer, web development team leader, or web publisher. You know who you are - you're the one who makes sure the site looks good, functions well, gets updated routinely, has a good user interface, interacts with readers, and displays content appropriately.

This book is explicitly not written for the database experts who will be getting down and dirty with XML implementation in the data trenches, although if you are a database type, this book will provide a useful background that positions the potential applications of XML within the Web environment. This book isn't targeted at SGML DTD gurus, either, or people who want to debate the minutiae of backend server applications.

What this book does is teach you about the potential of structured documents and the role XML plays in creating those documents. It will de-hype XML, exploring what it is and what it isn't. It will position XML within the alphabet soup of HTML, DHTML, CSS, XSL, DOM, and SGML. It will teach you enough about the XML and XSL standards that you can talk intelligently about them and understand the issues they raise. It will show you how to create well-formed and valid documents. It will teach you how to work with XML and the 5.X browsers to display pages in more powerful ways.
