Scalable Video on Demand
Adaptive Internet-based Distribution
Résumé
The amount of available video content has increased dramatically in the past 5 years. As this increase looks set to continue, content and service providers are looking into ways of making high-quality video available to a variety of clients, over a variety of platforms, with increasingly interactive functionality. Current research into Video-on-Demand applications focuses on making video content available whilst dealing with the absence of Quality of Service in the Internet and the heterogeneity of external Internet clients. New mechanisms allowing video streaming and data rates to adapt to available network and client resources are needed. This book outlines these new mechanisms and describes methodologies for their integration into video distribution architecture. By detailing the encoding formats currently under development and the challenges facing large-scale streaming systems, this book will help video engineers and researchers to make decisions on the design of new systems with enhanced capabilities.
- This book details the ways in which Video-on-Demand technology will facilitate access to a variety of high-quality video content over the internet.
- Presents the coding basics required to develop and understand new VoD applications.
- Details the algorithms and protocols necessary for optimized video streaming online.
- Features an accompanying website which will provide readers with the opportunity to asses video quality using a variety of examples.
- Details a real application (KOMSSYS) under development at the University of Darmstadt.
