Sc 530 histoire ecclesiastique, ii
Theodoret De Cyr - Collection Sources chrétiennes
Résumé
--
After Books I and II of 'Ecclesiastical History' (see tome I, SC 501), Theodoret's apologetic enterprise continues in Book III, which is entirely devoted to the Emperor Julian (361-363) and constructed like an authentic 'Contra Julianum', evoking 'the tyrant's impiety' in the face of Christians' resistance, especially those of Antioch. With books IV and V, the reader finds, in a series of narratives, the signs of emperors' piety (i.e. of orthodoxy), from Jovian to Theodosius II, and their submission to the bishops, with the exception of the Arian Valens whose persecution of the Nicene bishops is described at length in Book IV. The sole objective of this Ecclesiastical History - 'the edification of the Church' - is deployed in the three last books, even if the author permits himself some 'little arrangements' with historical fact in a 'History' that gives pride of place to The Church of Antioch, through the restored figures of the bishops, monks, even secular characters, and the diverse sources provided by its Episcopal archives and oral tradition.
