Résumé

The ship's geologist and naturalist was Charles Darwin. Darwin kept a diary throughout the voyage in which he recorded his daily activities, not only on board the ship but also during the several long journeys that he made on horseback in Patagonia and Chile. His entries tell the story of one of the most important scientific journeys ever made, narrated with matchless immediacy and vivid descriptiveness. He subsequently used about half of this diary, together with material taken from his scientific notes, as the basis for the famous account of the voyage of the Beagle that he published as Volume 3 of the Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majestys Ships Adventure and Beagle.

This edition of the diary bas been revised according to modem standards of transcription, with comprehensive footnotes relating diary entries to the highlights of the geological and zoological observations that Darwin recorded in his field notebooks. Maps, engravings and diagrams taken from Volumes i and 2 of the Narrative have been included to further enrich the entries.
