Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry

650 pages, parution le 15/05/2006 (4eme édition)

Résumé

This bestselling text introduces descriptive inorganic chemistry in a less rigorous, less mathematical way. The book uses the periodic table as basis for understanding chemical properties and uncovering relationships between elements in different groups. It familiarizes students with the historical background of inorganic chemistry as well as with crucial applications (especially in regards to industrial processes and environmental issues).

CONTENT

  • New expanded coverage of symmetry in Chapter 3, with new sections on Molecular Symmetry (3.13) and Symmetry and Vibrational Spectroscopy (3.14).
  • New expanded coverage of non-aqueous solvents in Chapter 7, including a new introduction to solvents (7.1), a revised presentation of Lewis Theory (7.6)
  • Environmental sections address relevant bioinorganic and environmental aspects of inorganic chemistry. This content is incorporated throughout, with additional environmental/applied sections and boxes per descriptive chapter (see p. xxii).
  • A chapter on Periodic Trends (Chapter 9) ties together the concepts and elements relating to the periodic table.
  • New coverage of cutting-edge topics including nanotechnology, electrolytic synthesis, chemical topology, and newly discovered elements

PEDAGOGY

  • New pedagogy including bolded Key Terms and Key Ideas sections at the end of each chapter that summarize the main concepts students should remember.
  • End-of-chapter review questions have students compare and contrast properties of various
  • Beyond the Basics problems requiring critical thinking, have been added at the ends of chapters, to help professors make their courses more challenging and less memory based.
  • Element Reaction Flow-Charts at the end of each descriptive chapter, help students recall the large number and wide variety of chemical reactions and see how they are related.
  • Video clips of key reactions provide students with a visual image of how the reactions take place. These clips appear on the Web site and are indicated by a video icon at the appropriate place in the text.

L'auteur - Tina Overton
