Résumé

This is the new edition of one of IOPP's key undergraduate astronomy books. The book 'Roy & Clarke' is well known to astronomers, and this book, in conjunction with their Astronomy: Structure of The Universe (2004) will serve students from 1st year undergraduates to MSc level.

Still used as a course text the new edition has been revised and extended to account for developments and changes in teaching over the last decade. It has been revised following extensive consultation with astronomy lecturers in the UK and USA, to ensure the material meets the needs of today's undergraduate students.

Together with the forthcoming companion volume Astronomy: Structure of The Universe, it comprises a complete course in modern astronomy. It introduces the concepts and historical development of astronomy and presents a course on positional measurement and celestial mechanics as well as describing the techniques and instrumentation of modern astronomical observation and measurement.
