Das Leben mag bunt sein, aber Schwarz-Weiss -Fotografie ist realistischer - so wurde es zumindest behauptet. Lange galt Farbfotografie ais kiinstlerisch nicht wertvoll, in der Kunstwelt waren nur Schwarz-Weiss-Bilder anerkannt. Künstlerische Farbfotografie hatte den Ruf, banal und amateurhaft zu sein, ein kommerzielles und dilettantisches Medium. Anfang der 1950er-Jahre begann Fred Herzog, diese etablierten Sehgewohnheiten und Lehrmeinungen zu revolutionieren und entwickelte ais Pionier der Farbfotografie einen genauen Blick fuir das vermeintlich Nebensächliche. Seine Motive zeigen die Strauen von Vancouver, Supermärkte, Tankstellen, Bars, Stadtszenen, Landschaften und immer wieder die Menschen semer Umgebung - die Höhen und Tiefen des (nord-)amerikanischen Traums. Life may be colorful, but black-and-white photography is more realistic-or so it was said. For many years, color photography was considered an inferior and not particularly valuable medium. Classic black-and-white photography was undisputed in the art world, but artistic color photography was supposedly banal and amateurish, a commercial medium for dilettantes. Fred Herzog began to revolutionize established viewing habits and existing orthodoxies in the early fifties. As a pioneer of color photography, he developed a profound visual sensibility for the ostensibly inconsequential. His subject matter includes Vancouver streets, supermarkets, gas stations, bars, urban and natural landscapes, and people in their environments, visualizing the highs and lows of the (North) American dream.
