"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. It tells the story of a Kansas farm girl named Dorothy who ends up in the magical Land of Oz after being swept away by a tornado with her pet dog Toto. She learns that she cannot return home until she destroys the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was initially published in 1900 and was followed by thirteen additional Oz books. The novel's success prompted Baum to write sequels.
