Egyptian Palaces and Villas
Pashas, Khedives, and Kings
Shirley Johnston, Sherif Sonbol
Résumé
In 1799 Napoleon conquered Egypt, overthrowing the last of the Mameluke beys who had ruled the country for centuries. When he and his army withdrew two years later, Mohamed Ali, a soldier of fortune from the Balkans, seized power. Although he and his successors nominally represented the Ottoman sultan in Istanbul, they ruled independently. More importantly, they created modern Egypt. They introduced the cultivation of cotton and sugar cane, laid down railroads, built new cities, and constructed new watercourses, including one of the great engineering triumphs of the nineteenth century, the Suez Canal.
These great endeavors brought Egypt unprecedented prosperity. As a result, throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, Egyptian rulers, great noble and merchant families, and foreign adventurers who had come to Egypt to seek their fortunes built opulent palaces and country estates to enjoy the enormous wealth they had gained. At the same time, investors introduced European-style grand hotels to accommodate the flood of Western tourists who had begun to travel to the land of the Nile to see the temples and tombs of the pharaohs. The splendid buildings created during this period of cosmopolitan expansion remain a lasting testament to Egypt's modern golden age.
Lavishly illustrated with color photographs taken specially for this book, Egyptian Palaces and Villas will fascinate and delight anyone interested in the Middle East and its history.
