Résumé

Professor Kaveh, in this third edition of his book, Structural Mechanics: Graph and Matrix Methods, has updated and considerably expanded the previous edition. It combines the concepts of graph theory and matrix algebra to obtain powerful tools for the efficient analysis of skeletal structures. Graph-theoretical concepts are developed and applied to the construction of highly sparse structural matrices. For efficient handling, the non-zero entries of these matrices are given special patterns by powerful ordering algorithms, developed by the author. An optimal analysis of skeletal structures is shown to be feasible, whether the force method or the displacement approach is employed. It provides a thorough study of the topological properties of structures. In this new edition, efficient approaches are developed for the analysis of large-scale systems. The concepts presented are applicable not only to skeletal structures: they can equally be used for the analysis of other systems such as hydraulic and electrical networks.
