In 1974 I wrote in the preface to my Everyman Dictionary of Abbreviations: "The manufacture of abbreviations remains one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world today". That is still true in 2002.

The military used to invent more abbreviations than anybody but computers and technology soon caught up. Medicine contributes many, as does sport. The financial world is quite active but in recent years this has accelerated and the publishers and I have decided that a separate dictionary is necessary.

An enormous number of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, initialisms, and symbols are created each week but most are forgotten by the end of the month. In this dictionary I've attempted to cover the fields of commerce, finance, banking, and accounting, but have also included large international organizations particularly where they have large budgets and influence financial activity. Trade unions and employers' organizations are included. I have not, with a few exceptions, included initials used by big corporations as their corporate names. I've included a few entries that are not abbreviations, although they look like them, such as CREST and ProShare. Currencies may have several entries, the ones used by the international banking community have "international currency symbol" at the end of the entry. Some entries have extended explanatory text. Finally, although the dictionary is international in content, UK and US entries tend to dominate.

I would be grateful to hear from readers who have suggestions for the improvement and extension of the present work. Planting and weeding is an important ongoing activity for dictionary compilers.
