Beginning SUSE Linux
From Novice to Professional
Keir Thomas - Collection The Expert's Voice in Open Source
Résumé
I wrote this book to share with you the powerful array of capabilities available to SUSE Linux users. The result is a comprehensive guide to this powerful operating system, heralded as one of the strongest Linux variants available. I believe you'll find that it is in parts entertaining and educational, and never overwhelming.
Beginning SUSE Linux is designed for the newcomer to Linux. It aims to guide you through numerous core topics relevant to effective operation of this popular operating system. This book starts by setting the scene, explaining Linux basics. Then it shows you how to install the software on your system, use the basic functions, and tweak the look and feel to your tastes. It is packed with troubleshooting tips, so that even the most cautious of beginners will feel right at home.
Next, the book moves on to day-to-day use of SUSE Linux. These days, we've grown accustomed to using our computer for both work and play. To help you quickly begin using SUSE as an all-purpose desktop, I show you how to configure your system for listening to audio CDs and MP3s, watching movies, performing office tasks, and keeping your system running in top shape.
You'll also gain an in-depth understanding of the heart of Linux. I explain how to master the command-line prompt, configure your firewall and other security measures, and handle administrative tasks (such as scheduling backups and managing users).
I hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
