Résumé

This book is an introductory text, which takes someone who has a rudimentary knowledge of object oriented concepts through the main elements of the C# programming language. The book will use a number of Internet-based examples to discuss the elements of the language and its relationship to the Microsoft .NET concept.

Key features

  • One of the first, if not the first textbook on the language
  • Practical approach, based on many examples and exercises with solutions provided on the website.
Contents
  • Chapter 1 – Introduction This Chapter describes the language in outline and briefly compares it with C++ and Java. It also describes the Microsoft .Net effort and the relationship C# has with it. (20 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 2 A short tutorialThis quite lengthy
  • Chapter provides a tutorial which introduces all the facilities of the language ranging from basic data types to classes and interfaces. It provides a short tutorial for someone who just wants a good introduction to the language. (40 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 3 Lexical structure
This Chapter provides a basic description of the main lexical entities in the language, for example the form of keywords, identifiers, operators, punctuators and pre-processing directives (15 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 4 Types and variablesC# data is split into value types and reference types.
The Chapter differentiates between them and describes the main types. The
  • Chapter also describes how variables are defined and used and the conversion rules used in C#. (25 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 5 Statements
This Chapter looks at how the various statements associated with the language are structured. These range from the standard flow of control statement such as if statements and while statements to less familiar ones such as checked and unchecked. statements. (20 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 6 Developing classesStandard stuff very much like a Chapter describing classes in Java. Topics described include static fields, instance fields, methods, virtual methods, override methods, abstract classes, sealed classes, constructors, indexers, overriding conventions, destructors and properties. (40 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 7 Case studyA case study shows all the topics detailed in the previous Chapter in use. The case study is of classes required to support a system which keeps track of the links used in a Web site which notifies users when Web pages have been changed or deleted. (25 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 8 Arrays and Structs
This Chapter describes C# collections: arrays where the elements are indexed and structs which are referenced by name. Topics detailed include: struct modifiers, struct bodies, array types, array creation and array covariance. (25 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 9 InterfacesAn introduction to interfaces: how they are declared and how they are used. Interfaces compared with abstract classes. (15 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 10 Interfacing with COMOne of the strengths of C# is the ease with which programs written in the language can communicate with COM objects.
This Chapter describes how this is achieved. Topics introduced include: an introduction to COM, COM attributes, and an example of using a COM object (a timer) within a C# program. (25 pages approx.)
  • Chapter 11 Name SpacesName spaces are used in C# to make elements of a program present themselves to other programs. This short Chapter looks at the syntax and semantics of name spaces and shows how a large scale C# system can be structured in terms of name spaces.
  • Chapter 12 Case studyThis case study uses all the facilities described in the book. It is the implementation of a simple E-commerce system for a bookseller which links up with a relational database system, but also employs COM objects such as those associated with Excel spreadsheets.
