Internet Explorer 5 Administration Kit
MCSE Study System
Résumé
If you're not planning to take the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) exam, but you want to develop a comprehensive working knowledge of how to administer Internet Explorer, then this book is also for you. The book covers all of the applications covered in the Internet Explorer 5.0 suite of software, how to configure them, and issues related to the operations and deployment of the Internet Explorer suite of software.
This book is designed to be the only book or course you need to prepare for and pass the IEAK 5 exam. The focus of the book is to give you the knowledge and understanding of all of the pieces of the suite so that you can pass the exam and know how to use the IEAK to deploy Internet Explorer 5.
How this book is organized ?
This book is organized in four parts, followed by a Resources section that contains appendixes and supplemental materials, as well as a CD-ROM. Within these major parts, each chapter begins with an overview of the topics that will be covered in that chapter. Then, pertinent information on each topic is presented. An Exam Preparation Summary, summarizing the preparation strategies for the exam, and a Key Point Summary, summarizing the chapter highlights and reviewing important material, follow. At the end of each chapter are Instant Assessment questions to make sure you understand and can apply what you've read. Additionally, at the end of many chapters are Hands-on Labs to help you master the specific tasks and skills tested by the exam.
Part I : The Overview
Part I covers the applications within the Internet Explorer
suite. In this Part, I talk about the basics of the
Internet Explorer browser, the browser's capabilities, and
technologies behind the scenes. I then move on to the
electronic mail client, Outlook Express, and discuss the
basics of e-mail and how to configure the client.
We will proceed to talk about data conferencing using
Microsoft Netmeeting, and how you can bring real-time
collaboration to the desktop using this powerful tool. I
conclude Part I with a discussion of Microsoft Windows
Media Technologies using Microsoft Media Player 6. You will
cover the configurations and other important information
about sound and video technologies using the Media Player
tool.
Part II : The Nuts and Bolts of Internet
Explorer
Part II starts with an in-depth discussion on how the
installation of the software works. You will learn about
the algorithms used to install the software, migrating from
other browsers, and other considerations. You will also
learn about event logging, basic troubleshooting, and how
to recover a failed installation.
Part III : Managing Internet Explorer Using the
Administration Kit
In Part III, I discuss the Internet Explorer Administration
Kit, the applications that you will learn to use to deploy
the Internet Explorer suite. You will learn about licensing
the products, how to get them, and what to do with them
once you are ready to deploy your browser.
Once I have covered the basics, I walk through all of the
configuration options you have for the Wizards and talk in
depth about the tool you will use to maintain the browser
configuration, the IEAK Profile Manager. You will learn
about how to deploy the browser using a variety of methods,
ways to maintain your configuration, and other means to
manage your browser configurations.
Finally, I cover the tool you will use to build dial-up
configurations for your users, the Connection Manager
Administration Kit. Using this tool, you will custom
configure proxy settings, phone books, protocols, realms,
and other options for your dial-up users.
Part IV: Tying It All Together
In Part IV, I cover planning your installation in detail
and point out things you need to think about when deriving
your configuration options. Also covered are lessons
learned from engineers who have deployed the software and
also taken the exam.
I then walk you through a sample deployment of Internet
Explorer from soup to nuts. Using the tools that you have
learned about up to this point, we will undertake a sample
implementation of Internet Explorer.
Part IV concludes with a chapter on troubleshooting the
various pieces of the suite and common issues that have
come up concerning deployments, and also Microsoft's
lessons learned.
