Everyone who uses a relational database-developer, administrator, system architect, or hobbyist-needs to understand the SQL language. Mastering Oracle SQL and SQL*Plus will show you how to write SQL that is both correct and efficient, and how to make the most effective use of Oracle's interactive SQL tool, SQL*Plus. First and foremost, this is a practical book, with many examples and exercises. On the other hand, foundations and concepts get proper attention too, resulting in a well-balanced mix of theory and practice.
On the face of it, SQL is an easy language to learn. Indeed, after a bit of practice, you won't get error messages anymore; each query will return a result. However, it is relatively easy to make mistakes in SQL, and you may find that you're not actually asking the question that you intended. This is where the theory becomes important. Most books on the market don't cover this, or don't cover it properly. As Gary Millsap (technical reviewer of this book) kindly put it, I lay a strong foundation before putting up the walls, windows, and pictures. I also take care to explain the wrong answers to the exercises in this book along with the right ones; again, something that most books do not do.
This book is based on Oracle Database 10g, but follows the latest version of the ANSI/ISO SQL standard (SQL:2003) as much as possible. It is based on my Dutch version of the same book, currently in its third edition, so the formula is "tried-and-tested." It is also, I hope, infused with my extensive experience teaching Oracle and the SQL language.
I am one of the founding members of the OakTable Network, and I am proud to add another book to the OakTable Press Series. I hope you enjoy it.
L'auteur - Lex de Haan
Lex de Haan worked for Oracle Corporation fourteen years, including four years as the senior curriculum manager for the education division, among the product development groups. In March, 2004, de Haan decided to "go independent" again, with "hisNatural Join B.V." consultancy. de Haan specializes in education and consulting in the areas of relational data modeling, SQL tuning, physical database design, database administration, and database internals. He presents training seminars on these topics all over the world. Since 1999, de Haan has been a member of the Dutch national body of the ANSI/ISO standardization committee for the SQL Language, working on the SQL:1999 and SQL:2003 standards. de Haan is a founding members of the Oaktable network.
