Sonet-Based Metro Area Networks

Daniel Minoli, Peter Johnson, Emma Minoli

526 pages, parution le 25/07/2002

Résumé

The hottest issue in telecom today is how to solve the Metro Area bandwidth bottleneck—with SONET being the solution tha appeals to most telecom companies. But to compete against Ethernet, SONET will need plenty of fine-tuning. This book will help service providers compare their options and fully understand what is really necessary to give current SONET installations "next generation" capabilities.
  • Shows how to achieve new-generation features with enhanced SONET and other optical architectures
  • Compares SONET's features and services with rival Ethernet-based offerings
  • Offers design approaches and business models for real-world deployments
  • Covers GMPLS generalized MPLS), a red-hot switching technology for wavelength services
In 2001 the telecom industry spent money on solving the Metro Area bandwidth bottleneck. SONET appeals to the telcos because it is widely deployed, reliable, robust, and scalable. But it will need multiple changes and enhancements to compete against the emerging rivil—Ethernet.

SONET or Ethernet?
How to extend broadband through Metro Area Networks—that's the question many carriers are asking. Many are answering “SONET” – but that's just the beginning of the questions. This expert guide offers serious help with the challenges of implementing SONET to push the information highway nearer the last mile.

SONET Solutions for MANs
The perfect resource for evaluating and deploying SONET as a MAN solution, communications experts Daniel Minoli's and Peter Johnson's SONET-Based Metro Area Networks can help you sort out your options and put your choices into action. This detailed guide helps you build business models, review protocols, contrast costs and features, and design and deploy next-generation platforms.

Eight insight-packed chapters help you:
  • Review all emerging metro protocols and their interactions
  • Decide with confidence on a cell or packet-switched network
  • Choose ATM or point-to-point
  • Achieve new features with enhanced SONET and multi-lambda rings
  • Apply in-depth answers on GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching)
  • Contend with complicated issues such as municipal-owned infrastructure
  • Discover next-generation design approaches and business models for real-world deployments
  • Solve conventional and urgent post-9/11 security issues

MAKE SENSE OF COMPLEX TECHNOLOGIES AND BURGEONING MARKETS
Don't step off the cliff without a parachute. This book is a survival tool for those planning, designing, and building architectures for Municipal Area Networks.
