Résumé
How This Book Is Organized
This book is divided into six parts. It starts by describing SuSE Linux installation and some basic systems. The second part describes basic system administrative function. From there, it proceeds to discuss related systems in the remaining parts.
Part 1: Installing and getting started with SuSE
Linux
The first part helps you to install SuSE Linux. It also
helps describe how the basic Linux process is started and
stopped. The Linux file system is also introduced.
Installing the operating system and learning some of the
Linux basics is the steppingstone to creating more complex
services.
Please note that the minimal SuSE Linux system is installed. This is done for two purposes:
First, it is better to install fewer software packages than more. This is true from both a security and reliability perspective. Minimizing the number of systems that a cracker can possibly use against you enhances security. Reliability is similarly increased when fewer systems are available to break down.
Second, we deliberately do not install the X Window
System. The X Window System, also known simply as X, is not
included in the minimal installation class and that fits
neatly into our philosophy. X is not used because many, if
not most, servers do not require any graphics to provide
their services. Omitting X creates a simpler, leaner
computer. Such a system fits into the philosophy described
above. Part 2: Managing users, processes, and the
networks
This part is devoted to the mundane but essential system
administration jobs. The day-to-day functions are not
glamorous but must be performed if your server is to
function efficiently and reliably. Fortunately, SuSE Linux
provides several tools for doing the dirty work and we
describe their use here.
The YaST utility is introduced. It performs most of the functions, such as managing users and modifying the network, that a system administrator needs to perform. The job of managing user accounts is described in one chapter. Managing Linux processes takes up another chapter. Finally, the important job of managing networks is described in the final chapter.
Part 3: Setting up Intranet and Internet
services
The third part is devoted to managing networks. The first
two chapters describe the basic functions of Domain Name
Service (DNS) and Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP).
Attention is then focused on the function that makes the
Web work ? the Apache Web server. Another chapter describes
how to configure an FTP server. The last chapter introduces
additional network services.
Part 4: Setting up file sharing and database
servers
This part describes how to configure file sharing and
databases. File sharing is accomplished via the Samba and
NFS systems. Samba allows you to share files and
directories with both Windows and Linux/UNIX computers. NFS
shares files and directories with other Linux and UNIX
systems. These services are devoted to helping people share
information.
Part 5: Securing and monitoring
These chapters describe how to start securing your servers
and networks. Security is a complex and ever-changing
subject. It is a subject that takes up volumes, but there
are several simple and common-sense things that you can do
to protect yourself. The security basics are described
here.
Part 6: Tuning for performance
The final chapters are devoted to helping you increase the
performance of your SuSE Linux server and creating a more
complex network of servers. You can readily modify the SuSE
Linux kernel to meet your own needs. A network of multiple
Web servers is also described.
