Oracle performance tuning is one of the most intriguing, and ultimately rewarding, aspects of DBA work. After fixing a tough performance problem, there's nothing quite like hearing the phrase "Wow! How did you do that?"

Oracle is a highly sophisticated and very flexible database. It supports a wide range of applications and often presents such a bewildering array of tuning options that the less experienced DBA can have difficulty even knowing where to start. Fortunately, help is at hand. Based on many years of "in the field" experience, I've developed a proven five-step process ("Physician to Magician") to help identify, isolate, and fix the causes of poor performance.

Performance tuning is part art and part science. Initially, we don the hat of the kindly physician, listening to our sick database "patient." Like the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, we then systematically hunt for clues and accumulate evidence. As pathologist, we isolate the root cause of the problem and then, as artist, we paint an elegant and effective solution. Finally, we become a magician, as the seemingly "impossible" performance problem is solved.

As you work through this process, you'll find numerous case studies describing real problems that I've encountered. You'll be amazed at the vast array of performance issues that can arise, but ultimately you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that, with the process and techniques described in this book, you're equipped to handle all of them.

Après avoir écumé toute la littérature dédiée à l'optimisation des performances sous Oracle je dois bien admettre que cet ouvrage est sans doute le plus complet dans le sens où il dévoile de manière détaillée la seule démarche valable permettant d'aboutir à la résolution des problèmes de performance, des plus simples au plus "tordus". De surcroît, au lieu de focaliser sur la méthode des ratios de performance (plus que limitée), il dévoile et détaille l'interface des "Wait events" si fondamentale dans la résolution des problèmes de performance. Tous les exemples cités à l'appui sont d'une grande limpidité. Enfin, une grosse partie de l'ouvrage est dédiée à ce qui vous permettra de résoudre plus de 80% des problèmes de performance sous Oracle : l'optimisation du code SQL. Voilà un ouvrage à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte !
