WiMax Operator's Manual

Building 802.16 Wireless Networks

Daniel Sweeney - Collection The Expert's Voice in Networking

210 pages, parution le 30/11/2005 (2eme édition)

Résumé

The new 802.16 standard for public wireless networks significantly simplifies entry for independent operators seeking to become providers of broadband services. 802.16 will also bring about lower equipment prices and improved network reliability and service levels. The second edition of WiMax Operator's Manual includes most of the material from the first edition, plus new discussions of:

  • The ultra-high-speed mobile telephone standard, HSDPA
  • Ultrawideband (UWB)
  • Changes to DSL technologies
  • Mobile voice
  • Mobile entertainment
  • New backup systems

This book will prove useful and accessible to any executive or manager interested in becoming a service provider and exploring the wireless option. I emphasize building the business case for wireless and achieving positive cash flow in the shortest period of time. The principles advocated are based on years of in-depth reporting on wireless data and on interviews with scores of successful operators. The second edition also reflects the changes that have occurred in the industry over the last year and half, including the emergence of prestandards wireless broadband equipment with fully developed mobile capabilities, significant alterations in the competitive landscape, and the opening of valuable new spectrum for broadband wireless operators.

Designing and implementing 802.16 service networks is far from a trivial undertaking and in many ways is more difficult than laying out a wired network. To succeed, network operators must have some understanding of the behavior of radio waves and have the ability to coordinate the channelization and sectorization of the radio spectrum with the packet switching that takes place within any broadband network. Simply put, wireless brings a whole new level of complexity to network planning. No how-to text can eliminate that complexity, but it can help to make it manageable, which has been my principal aim.
