L'auteur - Richard JEFFERIES

Richard Jefferies est né en 1848, à Coate Farm, dans le Wiltshire, au sud-ouest de l'Angleterre. D'une lignée de fermiers aisés, son père est confronté bientôt à la pauvreté, dans le contexte d'un pays en rapide industrialisation. Son enfance fut heureuse, et solitaire par choix, entre les longues promenades dans les collines et les lectures. À 17 ans, il est recruté comme reporter pour un journal de Swindon. Il se passionne pour l'archéologie et l'histoire locale. A partir de 1872, il donne des articles sur l'agriculture, le paysage et l'architecture à divers journaux. En 1874 il publie son premier roman, The Scarlet Shawl. Il se marie et s'installe à Swindon. Pour des raisons professionnelles, il doit s'installer près de Londres. Il publie alors dans le célèbre magazine illustré The Graphic. Malgré sa notoriété croissante, Jefferies continue à fuir le monde. En 1882, souffrant d'une fistule, il est opéré quatre fois, en vain. Dans des souffrances intolérables il écrit The Story of my Heart mais aussi The Pageant of Summer, magnifique description de la nature. À partir de 1885, ses souffrances et sa faiblesse sont extrêmes. Trop affaibli pour écrire, il dictera son œuvre à sa femme pendant les deux dernières années de sa vie. Le Royal Literary Fund proposa de lui verser une aide financière mais il refuse toute collecte en sa faveur. Il meurt à Goring en 1887, d'épuisement et de phtisie.
