Résumé

Lord Jim is a novel by Joseph Conrad that follows the story of a young British seaman named Jim. After abandoning a passenger ship in distress, Jim is publicly censured and seeks redemption and acceptance. He finds work as a ship chandler's clerk in the East Indies but constantly leaves when the memory of the incident catches up with him. Eventually, Jim settles in the fictional town of Patusan, where he earns the respect of the locals and falls in love with a woman named Jewel. However, tragedy strikes when a marauding captain arrives, leading to the death of Jim's friend and ultimately Jim's own execution. The novel explores themes of potential, redemption, and personal responsibility. Lord Jim is considered one of Conrad's most romantic and structurally sophisticated works. It has been ranked as one of the best English-language novels of the 20th century and has been adapted into various forms, including comics and films.
