In "My Lady Rotha: A Romance," the narrative unfolds in the small town of Heritzburg during the tumultuous period of the Thirty Years' War. The town, under the protection of the formidable Count Tilly, has remained largely untouched by the war's devastation. However, the death of Tilly and the victory of the Swedish King at Breitenfeld stir unrest and change the dynamics within the town. The local innkeeper, Klink, and other townsfolk, spurred by the Burgomaster Hofman and the Minister Dietz, seek to expel the Worts due to their faith, threatening the peace of the town. Despite the pressure from the town's changes, Countess Rotha stands firm in her resolve to protect the Worts, emphasizing her duty to uphold the law and defend the defenseless.
