Davy Jones, known for his daring stunts, mistakenly believes he has seen a panther in a tree, which turns out to be a large owl. The boys decide to keep the owl as a pet, naming it Jim. The next day, they reach the village where their boat, the Chippeway Belle, awaits them. Despite some initial concerns about the boat's engine, the scouts set off on their cruise. However, their journey is not without mishaps. The engine suddenly stops, causing panic among the scouts, especially Bumpus, who jumps overboard in fear. Thad and Allan quickly reassure the group and manage to fix the engine, allowing them to continue their adventure.
