"The Last Man" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley begins with an introduction set in 1818 Naples, where the narrator and a companion explore the ancient ruins of Baiæ and the Cumæan Sibyl's cave. They discover Sibylline leaves inscribed with prophecies in various languages, including English and Italian. The narrator, intrigued by these writings, dedicates time to deciphering them, finding solace and peace in their mysterious content. The narrative then shifts to the story of Lionel Verney, a young man from a humble background in England. Verney's father was once a close friend of the last king of England, who abdicated in 2073, leading to the establishment of a republic. After his father's death, Lionel and his sister Perdita are left destitute. Lionel grows up as a rebellious shepherd, harboring resentment towards the Earl of Windsor, the king's son, whom he blames for his family's misfortunes. However, when Lionel meets Adrian, the young Earl of Windsor, he is struck by Adrian's kindness and wisdom. Adrian, aware of Lionel's father's legacy, extends friendship and support to Lionel, offering him a chance to rise above his circumstances. This encounter marks a turning point for Lionel, who begins to embrace a new path of intellectual and moral growth, inspired by Adrian's example. The story explores themes of friendship, redemption, and the transformative power of compassion and understanding.

L'auteur - Mary W. Shelley

Fille d’une philosophe et d’un écrivain, Mary Shelley naît en 1797. En 1814, sa rencontre avec le poète anglais Percy Shelley bouleverse sa vie ; elle l’épouse deux années plus tard. A tout juste 18 ans, elle achève son premier roman, Frankenstein, qui se classera au rang de chef-d’½uvre. Après le décès de son mari en 1823 et jusqu'à sa propre mort en 1851, elle se consacre à sa carrière d’écrivain et à l’édition de l’½uvre du poète.
