Résumé

"The Perjur'd Husband; or, The Adventures of Venice" is a tragedy by Susanna Centlivre that unfolds in the vibrant setting of Venice during the Carnival. The play explores themes of love, betrayal, and redemption through the complex relationships between its characters. Count Bassino, a Savoyard nobleman, is torn between his duty to his wife, Placentia, and his illicit love for the young Venetian lady, Aurelia. Despite his initial resolve to remain faithful to Placentia, Bassino's passion for Aurelia leads him into a web of deceit and emotional turmoil. Aurelia, betrothed to Alonzo, finds herself equally conflicted as she harbors feelings for Bassino. Her struggle between loyalty to Alonzo and her love for Bassino creates a tension that drives the narrative forward. Alonzo, unaware of Aurelia's true feelings, becomes suspicious and confronts Bassino, leading to a near-duel that is averted only by Bassino's assurances of innocence. The play also introduces Lady Pizalta, who, dissatisfied with her marriage to the older Pizalto, seeks the affections of the charming Ludovico. Her subplot adds a layer of intrigue and humor, contrasting with the main narrative's more serious tone. As the story progresses, Bassino's friend Armando plays an intermediary role in attempting to guide him back to virtue and his wife, Placentia. The climax of the play sees Placentia confronting Bassino, leading to a moment of potential redemption as Bassino realizes the depth of his wife's love and the folly of his actions. Centlivre's work is a rich tapestry of human emotions, exploring the consequences of infidelity and the possibility of forgiveness. The play's setting during the Carnival in Venice adds a backdrop of festivity and disguise, mirroring the characters' own deceptions and desires.
