L'auteur - Frances Hodgson Burnett

Frances Eliza Hodgson est née en 1849 en Angleterre. Élevée dans un milieu aisé jusqu’à ses quatre ans, sa famille bascule dans la pauvreté à la mort de son père. Cet épisode la marque profondément : la misère et les différences sociales seront très présents dans ses textes. En 1865, toute la famille part vivre aux États-Unis. L’amour de Frances pour l’écriture se manifeste très tôt et elle entame une carrière d’auteur en envoyant ses textes à des magazines féminins. Son tout premier roman, Le Petit Lord Fauntleroy (1886), rencontre un grand succès. La Petite Princesse paraît d’abord en roman-feuilleton en 1888, puis en roman. Frances vit à nouveau dans le luxe et alterne les séjours entre son pays natal et les États-Unis. Un troisième ouvrage, Le Jardin Secret, inspiré de son enfance pauvre et de son amour pour le jardinage, est édité en 1911.
Outre ses titres jeunesse pour lesquels elle est mondialement célèbre, elle a également écrit de nombreux autres romans pour différents publics.
