Résumé

"The Vicar of Wakefield" is a novel written by Oliver Goldsmith and published in 1766. It tells the story of Dr. Charles Primrose, a vicar who lives a peaceful life with his wife and children until he loses all his money due to a bankruptcy. The family moves to a new parish where they encounter a womanizing landlord and a mysterious friend named Mr. Burchell. The plot takes a dramatic turn when the vicar's daughter is deceived by a man named Squire Thornhill, leading to a series of unfortunate events. However, Mr. Burchell, who is revealed to be Sir William Thornhill in disguise, comes to the rescue and resolves all the problems. The novel is structured into three parts and includes various literary genres such as poems and sermons. It is considered a sentimental novel that explores the innate goodness of human beings and has been referenced in other literary works.
