Résumé
Clusters, ranging in size from a few atoms to many millions
of atoms, constitute a fascinating field of research, which
cuts across the boundaries of physics, chemistry and
materials science. They can be formed by most elements, and
the types of bonding they exhibit are equally varied.
Atomic and Molecular Clusters serves as an introduction to
atomic clusters - ranging from weakly bonded clusters of
argon to strongly bonded carbon clusters (the well known
fullerenes) and metal nano-particles - as well as clusters
composed of molecular and ionic building blocks. It
describes the experimental generation, detection and
interrogation of clusters and theoretical approaches
developed to aid our understanding of their physical
properties. Examples of present and possible future
applications of clusters in electronic, optical and
magnetic devices are also presented.
