--
The unique conversion of Louis Massignon at the age of 25, in the dramatic circumstances related by his son Daniel (Le Voyage en Mésapotamie et la conversion de Louis Massignon en 1908, Le Cerf, 2001), was witnessed first-hand by a Carmelite priest of Lebanese origin in Baghdad, Father Anastase (1866-1947). This priest, a Carmelite scholar who spoke the Arabic language, was Massignon's companion on the long journey that brought him back to France - a figure reminiscent of the Archangel Raphael on the road with young Tobias - as he himself was to put it several years later. He went all the way back to Brittany with him, where he met his parents. These letters from Louis Massignon and his family to Father Anastase are to be read in the context of that decisive event which was Louis' 'homecoming' to the Catholic Church and his childhood faith. They reflect all the intimacy and warmth of the family relationships Marie Massignon, his mother, writes that Louis' presence had 'become, once again, as gentle as when he was very young'. Profound spiritual and intellectual exchanges, they bear witness to one of the friendships that modelled the budding career of the great and learned 20th century orientalist. Daniel Massignon's unfinished manuscript has been completed and prefaced by Father Maurice Borrmans, teacher at the Institute of Arab and Islamic studies (PISAI) in Rome.
