'This will be a little night-time notebook.' With these words, Marie de Saint-Jean, founder of the Congrégation des Dominicaines missionnaires des campagnes, began, in 1938, this notebook specially reserved for thoughts born of her nocturnal prayers: radiant thoughts engendered by the shadows of insomnia. Night-time was the only moment when Mother Saint-Jean - as she was known to her sisters - found herself alone in the presence of her Lord. When she began this notebook, her congregation had been in existence for only six years and Mother Saint-Jean was sixty-two years old, in uncertain health and leading a turbulent life: 'I no longer have what I once had, the charm of youth that augmented the unearthly prestige of a soul rich in divine tenderness. Now I am only an unimpressive little old lady whose heart nevertheless burns with immense love.' This notebook is a mother superior's prayers for the congregation she governs, but it is also those of a mother for her daughters. In it, we can admire the saintly traits of a nun carrying out her duties: kindness, generosity, a down-to-earth attitude and respect for people's individuality and vulnerability...
