Commentaire du prologue à la règle de saint benoît
Smaragde - Collection Sagesses chretiennes
Résumé
--
Smaragde (c.750-c.830) was a Benedictine monk originally from Spain or southern Gaul who, in all probability, entered a monastery in Aquitaine where he taught grammar. Advisor to Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, he wrote a certain number of works of which the most important are 'Livre sur les parties du discourse selon Donat' and 'Commentaire de la Règle de saint Benoît', written while in office as abbot of Saint-Mihiel-sur-Meuse, not far from Verdun. This text is of interest to us for several reasons: a work of maturity and his most personal, it is the first known commentary on the Rule which has been handed down to us also, because it must have been written shortly after the author's participation in the Council of Aix-la-Chapelle in 817, in the context of Benedict of Aniane's reforms and concerning their application. It sheds light on the way monastic life was conducted at the time of Louis the Pious. Smaragde employs his extensive culture in his search for God and His ultimate aims. His theology, as it emerges from his 'Commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict', is open, balanced and ecclesial. For Smaragde is not simply addressing monks, but all the faithful, calling upon them to live according to baptismal grace. The text of 'Commentary on the Prologue to the Rule of Saint Benedict', here receiving its first translation, is prefaced by Dom. Pius Engelbert, OSB, author of the critical edition of 'Expositio in regulam s. Benedicti' and currently Abbot of Gerleve Abbey (the diocese of Münster, Germany). The introduction and translation are by Dom. Jean-Eric Stroobant de Saint-Eloy, OSB, a Benedictine monk in the Notre-Dame-des-Prés community in Moustier-en-Fagne (the diocese of Cambrai), several of whose works have been published by Editions du Cerf in the collection 'Oeuvres de Thomas d'Aquin'.
