Concrete Segmental Bridges: Theory, Design, and Construction to AASHTO LRFD Specifications

Dongzhou / Hu Huang

994 pages, parution le 06/01/2020

Résumé

Segmental concrete bridges have become one of the main options for major transportation projects world-wide. They offer expedited construction with minimal traffic disruption, lower life cycle costs, appealing aesthetics and adaptability to a curved roadway alignment. The literature is focused on construction, so this fills the need for a design-oriented book for less experienced bridge engineers and for senior university students.

It presents comprehensive theory, design and key construction methods, with a simple design example based on the AASHTO LRFD Design Specifications for each of the main bridge types. It outlines design techniques and relationships between analytical methods, specifications, theory, design, construction and practice. It combines mathematics and engineering mechanics with the authors' design and teaching experience.

Dongzhou Huang is currently with Atkins North America as a General Engineering Consulting Engineer working for the Florida Department of Transportation. He currently also serves as an Associate Editor for ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering and an Editor/Board Member of SEI Journal of International Association of Bridge and Structures Engineering (IABSE). He has been an associate professor, visiting professor, and professor at Tongji University, Florida International University, and Fuzhou University for more than twenty years and has taught several University courses including: "Design of Concrete Bridges", "Stability and Vibration of Bridge Structures" and "Computer Applications in Bridge Engineering". Dr. Huang has been engaged in bridge engineering for over thirty years and has gained extensive professional experience in bridge theory, design, and construction. He has authored or co-authored more than ninety technical papers on different types of bridges, including box girder, concrete segmental, curved girder, cable-stayed, and arch bridges. Dr. Huang has worked in two bridge design firms and actually participated in the design, analyses, and construction of different types of concrete segmental bridges, including span-by-span constructed segmental bridges, precast cantilever segmental bridges, cast-in-place cantilever segmental bridges, cable-stayed bridges and spliced concrete I-girder bridges. Bo Hu is a senior bridge engineer in the Edmonton office of AECOM. He has been engaged in bridge engineering for twenty years with research and design experience in seismic behaviors of bridge structures, seismic design methodology for bridge structures, and design of various types of bridges. He has extensive experience with design, evaluation, and construction for concrete segmental bridges, including serving as the lead design engineer for I-4 Crosstown Connector project in Tampa, FL, and for the design of the extradosed segmental bridge in the Valley Line LRT project in Edmonton, AB. In addition, he has played a leading role in the design and rehabilitation of numerous post-tensioned concrete bridges.
