Constructing Shadows
Pergolas, Pavilions, Tents, Cables, and Plants
Résumé
Trees are the optimal sources of shade. They allow light to pass through in the winter, and offer protection from it in the summer. However, trees cannot be planted everywhere, and pergolas, pavilions, gazebos, tents, awnings, canopies, arbors, or cables can also take on the rote of providing shade outdoors. The function of providing shade is the focal point of small buildings and tents, whereas pergolas or arcades incorporate the concept of a supporting framework and foliage. Essays on construction methods, structural engineering, the historical background, and, of course, the phenomenon of shade and shadow together convey the theoretical bases. The most important, useful plants for providing shade on architectural structures are presented in a systematically ordered catalog of plants. Structural details from the foundation to connections and the type of shadow they cast : thirty-two excellent and representative projects from five continents, including true to scale detail drawings, form a unique source of inspiration for every planner.
