Il analyse comment le monastère en plein « dans le monde » ne doit cependant pas être « du monde » pour rester fidèle à l'Évangile et à sa vocation propre de chercheur et de témoin. Marc Doucet montre comment une abbaye bénédictine, vouée à « chercher Dieu » dans la contemplation et à le dire par la mission - et ce, sur presque tous les continents -, a vécu cette vocation dans un contexte historique d'abord hostile, puis au cours d'une période de grand renouveau de l'Église de France.
