This is one of the first treaties ever written on the subject of love in the Western world. It includes the 'primitive scene' (the quarrel between Eros and Agape) and allows us, with hindsight, to comprehend what becomes of desire when caught up in the web of pleasure. Eros? The Greek word for desire, a love that is 'human, all too human'. Agape? This is the word used to describe the new love: strictly that of God and the only paradigm for those close to us. Beyond his rigorous spirituality, Anders Nygren invites us to an anthropological encounter with ourselves: the creation of love in the Western world based on the Christian struggle to obtain dominance over agape. He forcefully reminds us of the 'primitive independence of Eros and agape' and, while restoring the truth of their genealogy, reveals their deep antinomy rooted in the New Testament. The Swedish theologian's work - reprinted at last - is already recognized as the most complete contribution of the essence of Christianity. For many of his peers, it dethroned the work of Harnack. Little known in literary circles, it nevertheless eclipses Denis de Rougemont's study. In philosophy, it was heralded by Wilamowitz when he wrote: 'Paul knew as little about Eros as did Plato about agape.' It also offers a perfect illustration of Nietzsche's aphorism: 'Chritianity has poisoned Eros - it isn't dead, but it has become vicious.' Moreover, doesn't this book answer Lacan's attack on analysts, when he claimed they were deeply involved but, at the same time, 'the least equipped in relation to that tradition of love'? Standing at the crossroads of all these distinct disciplines, Nygren's book essentially looms over them. That is to say, it quite simply invites them - each according to its own specificity - to properly treat what they have always more or less abused. A challenge? Certainly. [Lucrèce Luciani-Zidane]
