Résumé

In "From Sea to Sea," Rudyard Kipling embarks on a journey through India, offering a vivid portrayal of Jeypore, a city that stands as a testament to the fusion of ancient traditions and modern advancements. Kipling begins by reflecting on the historical significance of Rajputana, a region marked by its storied past of battles and royal intrigues. He introduces Jeypore as a city that has embraced both its rich heritage and the changes brought by British influence. The narrative delves into the architectural grandeur of Jeypore, highlighting the contributions of Maharaja Jey Singh, who envisioned a city with broad streets and monumental structures. Kipling describes the city's evolution under the guidance of Colonel Jacob, who introduced modern amenities such as gas lighting, waterworks, and a school of art, blending them seamlessly with the traditional Rajput architecture. Kipling's exploration takes him to the ancient city of Amber, a place of haunting beauty and historical significance. He paints a picture of a once-thriving city now in ruins, where the silence is broken only by the cooing of pigeons. The narrative shifts to the modern side of Jeypore, where Kipling observes the bustling life and the coexistence of tradition and progress. He visits the Mayo Hospital and the Museum, marveling at the architectural brilliance and the dedication to preserving knowledge and culture. Throughout his journey, Kipling reflects on the impact of British influence on Indian society, acknowledging the complexities and contradictions that arise from this cultural exchange. His narrative is a blend of admiration, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the intricate tapestry of India's past and present.
