Histoire de paul de tarse
Murphy-O'connor Jerome - Collection Bible de jerusalem
Résumé
--
The number of books about the apostle Paul is impressive. Yet Paul remains a mysterious figure. Moreover, the debates about his theological writing have distracted attention from his personality. But what if his personality were a key to understanding his work? Jerome Murphy-O'Connor takes the reader to meet Paul, who didn't only have ideas about God, he also had feelings: like us, he experienced joy, sadness, fear and anger! Yet this book is not a 'historical novel': the imagination is constantly kept in check by the author's deep knowledge of the texts and historical and cultural reality. Not only does he explain what Luke said - the disciple was a biased witness with only partial knowledge -, but he studies the letters in detail, resituating them in their context. Only a historian with an excellent knowledge of literature and the life of those times could have described the career of a young Pharisee, student of the Romans' social customs and the travelling conditions of those times. So what we are reading is a 'real-life story', but also a fine adventure, like the 'story' Paul himself told with so much passion: that of a man sent by God to save all men.
