Justin martyr - apologie pour les chretiens
Charles Munier - Collection Patrimoines - christianisme
Résumé
--
This work is laid out in the manner of a thematic exposé, in the tradition of the philosophy schools it is a plea in favour of those Christians unjustly accused and persecuted. Justin begins by refuting the widespread accusations: Christians are neither atheistic nor seditious. Their blameless conduct and their loyalty are proof of their honesty. Their teachings extol those virtues of greatest value to the city: a dignified life, mutual aid, patience, non-violence. Their dogma has nothing incredible or absurd. There follows a doctrinal account of Christianity, centred on the person and the teachings of Christ, Logos, Son of God, made man, who through Incarnation entered into history, died on the cross, resurrected and returned to God, awaiting the Second Coming. Now resting on this thesis, according to which the Christian doctrine is superior to pagan concepts regarding divinity, Justin develops his proof by citing the Scriptures: since the Jewish prophets foretold all the major events in the life and mission of Christ, as well as the destruction of Jerusalem and Judea, the persecution of His disciples, the conversion of the pagans and the incredulity of Israel, it follows that the person of Our Lord Jesus Christ has an element of the divine. Justin then gives a brief account of the basic rites of the Christian religion, Baptism and the Eucharist, which involve nothing suspect or criminal. This exposé proved that Christian life, doctrine and religion merited consideration and respect consequently the law required that innocents should not be condemned, contrary to what was taking place throughout the Empire, where unscrupulous men betrayed Christians before the courts, demonstrated in Rome itself by the martyrdom of Ptolemy and his companions.
