L'aristocratie odryse

Le départ des forces perses du nord de l'Égée en 479 av. J.-C. engage un processus de recomposition politique qui consacre l'emprise d'Athènes sur les cités grecques du littoral égéen et accompagne l'expansion du Royaume de Macédoine. Parallèlement émerge en Thrace un pouvoir royal, celui des Odryses, qui dépasse pour la première fois le cadre de la tribu en imposant sa domination sur un large territoire couvrant, sous Sitalkès (ca. 430 av. J.-C.), toutes les terres présentes entre les rivages nord?égéens et le Danube.
Dès lors s'élabore au sein de ce nouvel état une identité aristocratique originale qui joue un rôle unificateur auprès des élites locales. L'apparition d'insignes au sein du mobilier funéraire témoigne en effet des modes de représentation d'une classe aristocratique dont les membres partagent un mode de vie luxueux reposant sur des goûts et des choix originaux qui transparaissent notamment dans l'art du banquet. Cette demande suscite en retour une circulation inédite des formes et des usages, désormais possible par la mobilité d'artisans grecs et thraces que favorise le décloisonnement de cet espace.
Ce volume constitue la publication des actes du colloque organisé à Paris, au musée du Louvre et à l'Institut de France les 12 et 13 juin 2015 dans le cadre de l'exposition L'épopée des rois Thraces. Réseaux d'échanges, établissements de commerce et de production, activités et techniques artisanales, sont étudiés tour à tour à l'aune des dernières découvertes archéologiques réalisées en Bulgarie, en Turquie d'Europe et dans le nord de l'Égée.

The withdrawal of Persian forces from the northern Aegean in 479 BC initiated a process of political reordering, which consecrated the supremacy of Athens over the Greek cities of the Aegean coast and enabled the expansion of the Macedonian kingdom. At the same time, a royal power emerged in Thrace, that of the Odrysians. It reached beyond the political framework of the tribe by imposing its domination over a large territory - under Sitalkes (ca. 430 BC) containing all the lands between the North Aegean shore and the Danube.
Henceforth, an original aristocratic identity spread within this new kingdom, which played a unifying role for the local elites. The emergence of insignia in grave-goods bears witness to the social representation of an aristocratic class whose members shared a luxurious way of life based on original tastes and choices, reflected in particular in the practice of the symposium. This demand in turn gave rise to an unprecedented circulation of forms and uses, now possible through the gradual opening of this area to the mobility of Greek and Thracian craftsmen.
This volume constitutes the proceedings of the conference organised in Paris, at the Louvre Museum and the Institut de France on 12th and 13th June 2015 in the framework of the exhibition The Epic of the Thracian Kings. Exchange networks, commercial and production settlements, craft activities and techniques are studied in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries carried out in Bulgaria, European Turkey and the northern Aegean.
