L'église du saint-esprit

C'est au cours de la sombre année 1940-1941 que Nicolas Afanassieff commença « L'Église du Saint-Esprit », « cet hymne à la gloire de l'Église qui seule peut unir par l'Amour au milieu d'une humanité déchirée par la haine ». Ce livre, il l'a porté jusqu'à sa mort en 1966, sans pour autant parvenir à lui donner sa forme définitive. C'est sa femme, assistée d'un de ses plus fidèles disciples, qui en acheva la publication. L'ouvrage est le fruit non seulement d'une longue réflexion mais aussi d'une vie de prière, de méditation et de service de l'Église. « On pense généralement, confiait-il à sa femme, que j'écris grâce à mon esprit logique et abstrait et grâce à mon érudition. Certes, ce sont là des choses utiles. Mais je commence à écrire par le sang et les larmes de mon coeur. » On retrouve dans ce livre tous les thèmes que le grand théologien russe a développés, tant dans son enseignement à l'Institut Saint-Serge que dans ses articles : sa vision d'une « ecclésiologie eucharistique », qu'il avait d'ailleurs esquissée dans une contribution très remarquée à l'ouvrage collectif « La Primauté de Pierre dans l'Église orthodoxe » (1960) son sens de la primauté de l'Amour enfin et surtout sa conviction touchant le caractère charismatique de la vie ecclésiale. Pour lui, l'Église commence dans l'Esprit. Elle vit par Lui et pour Lui. Les dons de l'Esprit ne sont pas accordés pour eux-mêmes mais en vue d'un ministère dans l'Église, pour constituer le Corps du Christ. Il n'est, en effet, pas un principe d'anarchie, mais d'organisation pour l'Église. La traduction de cette somme ecclésiologique, préfacée par dom Olivier Rousseau, l'un des pionniers du mouvement oecuménique, répond à l'un des voeux bien souvent formulés par le P. Congar : que la voix de l'Orthodoxie se fasse davantage entendre dans la recherche théologique contemporaine. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que la large vision charismatique de l'Église qui nous est ici présentée se trouve en profonde résonance avec les mouvements de renouveau spirituel qui se font jour actuellement dans les Églises chrétiennes.

It was during the dark year of 1940-1941 that Nicolas Afanassieff began L'Église du Saint-Esprit, this 'hymn to the glory of the Church which alone can unite, through Love, a humanity rent by hatred'. He carried this book with him until his death in1966, without however managing to give it its final form. It was his wife, assisted by one of his most faithful disciples, who succeeded in getting it published. This work is not only the fruit of a long reflection but also of a life of prayer, meditation and service to the Church. 'People generally imagine,' he once confided to his wife, 'that I write thanks to my logical and abstract spirit and my erudition. Certainly, those are very useful. But I begin writing with the blood and tears of my heart.' In these pages, we find all the themes developed by the great Russian theologian, whether in his teaching at the Institut Saint-Serge or in his articles: his vision of a 'Eucharistic ecclesiology' which he had sketched out in a greatly admired contribution to the collective work La Primauté de Pierre dans l'Église orthodoxe (1960) his belief in the primacy of Love and last but not least his conviction regarding the charismatic nature of ecclesial life. For him, the Church begins in the Holy Spirit, living through and for the Holy Spirit the gifts it receives are not granted for their own sake but with the ministry of the Church in view, in order to constitute the Body of Christ. The principle is, in effect, not one of anarchy but of organisation of the Church. The translation of this huge ecclesiological work, prefaced by Dom Olivier Rousseau, one of the pioneers of the ecumenical movement, satisfies a wish often expressed by Father Congar: that the voice of Orthodoxy be heard more often in contemporary theological research. So it is not surprising that the broad charismatic vision of the Church presented to here should profoundly echo the movements of spiritual renewal that are currently emerging in Christian Churches.
