Résumé
--
What Saint François Xavier longed for, as he neared death in 1552 off the coast of China, was to proclaim the Gospel of Christ to the Middle Empire. His Jesuit brothers realized his dream by inaugurating, or almost, a long period of fascination - but also misunderstanding - between Christianity and China. Father Étienne Ducornet, historian and theologian, erudite scholar of the language and the life of Christians in China, takes his investigation to our times, questioning the relation between two universes of thought. He identifies three challenges that the Church of China must face today: enculturation, communion and modernity. His book, which enlightens without ever dazzling, takes account of the hazy areas and the complexities, informs and invites us to reflect on the true questions, and how immense are the stakes in the meeting of two destinies.
