Montalembert Charles De - Collection La nuit surveillée
Résumé
--
Are Catholicism and public freedom compatible? In the 19th century, many were sceptical. But for Montalembert (1810-1870), a disciple of Lamennais and friend of Tocqueville whose education was Franco-British, the answer was clear: 'Freedom needs religion and religion needs freedom.' Under the July Monarchy, the most famous of the Catholic parliamentarians fought tirelessly in the name of freedom. Confronted with the 1851 coup d'état, he was forced to make a testing decision: uphold order or choose freedom. He hesitated, but finally remained faithful to his principles, which he brilliantly describes in his book 'Catholic Interests in the Nineteenth Century' (1852). Excluded from the spheres of power, regarded with suspicion in Rome, he nevertheless reoffended before the Belgian Catholics in Mechlin and defended the principle of 'A Free Church in a Free State' (1863). The Catholic Church took on board his ideas a century later, in Vatican Council II's declaration on religious freedom. We find those two major pieces of writing here, restored to their proper context, in an annotated edition that facilitates an understanding of all the stakes involved.
