L'homme debout

La vocation de l'homme est inscrite dans sa chair, porteuse de l'image de Dieu, écrit saint Irénée. Cette affirmation fut pour Donna Singles, alors étudiante en théologie à Lyon, un choc décisif quand elle entendit le professeur Maurice Jourjon la prononcer. Séparée de nous par dix-huit siècles, mais si proche des sources de la foi chrétienne, la pensée d'Irénée, le premier grand théologien de l'Église, est en effet de celles qui peuvent parler aux femmes et aux hommes d'aujourd'hui : par sa vision joyeuse de la venue du Christ, son sens de la croissance de la vie, son appel à participer à la symphonie inachevée de la Création... Donna Singles était venue des États-Unis, son pays natal, à Lyon. Et c'est à Lyon, capitale des Gaules, qu'était venu s'installer Irénée, après avoir quitté Smyrne, sa ville natale (l'actuelle Izmir en Turquie). Par-delà les siècles, une rencontre dans la même foi allait mobiliser pendant des années l'énergie et l'enthousiasme considérables de cette Américaine très originale. Alliant la passion à la rigueur et à la compétence d'une longue fréquentation de l'oeuvre d'Irénée, elle nous propose ici sa « clé de lecture » pour entrer dans son langage, celui des premiers siècles, et découvrir à quel point il peut nous rejoindre et nous éclairer aujourd'hui. Les chapitres du livre suivent tout simplement les articles du Credo, du symbole des Apôtres, la foi d'Irénée étant interrogée sur chacun de ces articles, d'où une présentation particulièrement claire et accessible.

For Donna Singles, a student in theology in Lyons, that statement came as a shock the day she heard Professor Maurice Jourjon pronounce it. Eighteen centuries lie between us yet the thoughts of Irenaeus, the first great theologian of the Church, remain so close to the sources of Christian faith that they are still able to speak to men and women of today through his joyful vision of the advent of Christ, his sense of development in life, his call upon us to participate in the unfinished symphony of the Creation... Donna Singles had come from the United States, her native land, to Lyons. And it was there in Lyons, the capital of the Gauls, that Irenaeus settled after leaving Smyrna, his native land (now Izmir in Turkey). Their similar faiths met across the centuries, spurring the energy and enthusiasm of that exceptional American woman. Combining passion, rigour and the fruit of her long studies of Irenaeus' work, she brings us a 'reading key' to enter into his language, that of those early centuries, to discover how clearly he can speak to us and enlighten our lives today. The chapters of the book correspond to the Articles of the Creed, symbol of the Apostles. Irenaeus' faith is explored on the occasion of each article, making for a particularly clear and accessible presentation.
