Résumé
--
Consisting of three tomes devoted to civil disobedience and the rescuing of Jews during France's years of occupation, Limore Yagil's study does not revisit the anti-Semite laws or the Vichy regime's policy of exclusion. It does however reveal that for many refugees and Jews, France was a true refuge during that period. Three quarters of the French Jewish community survived. Limore Yagil presents the unique history of those who broke the law to save Jews. To do this, she reconstituted the assistance networks that were formed as early as 1940 and grew larger by the month. The geography of saving Spanish refugees was much the same as that of saving Jews it was the militants of those networks that helped Polish, Russian, German, and Czech refugees who first disobeyed the Vichy government in order to help Jews. This is a history made up of thousands of individual acts performed by people who had one thing in common: a certain ability to disobey. Without them, that history could never have been written. The span of this exceptional work comes from the fact that it is a global study, not limited to the courageous acts of people who were officially recognized, such as the 'Righteous among the nations' neither does it focus on one area of France. So we can observe that jews found refuge not only in zones with a Protestant majority, and that although Catholic bishops remained silent in their majority, they still helped Jews in their dioceses. And that prefects, civil servants and gendarmes helped the Jews, although they had sworn fidelity to Maréchal Pétain. Artists, scientists, academics, doctors, social workers, protestant ministers and Resistants, in large numbers, refused to remain idle when they saw the fate of the Jews, adults and children alike, and they took very real risks to help them. Based on a archival sources, this investigation paints a picture of local history and cultural practices, underlining the alliance between human geography and history. Full of information, avoiding the traps of memory and commemoration, it is worthy of its unique subject, which deserved a new reflection seventy years after the events.
