Healing concerns everyone but belongs to no one. Both beneficial and mysterious, it obliges Christians to consider the body as a place where redemption may be manifested. While society worships the young, beautiful and healthy body, tending to reject those that do not conform to these ideals, faith shows the body to be a means of accepting vulnerability. The Church remembers that we received salvation from a body that never healed: the crucified body of Christ. In the light of the cross, the Eucharist and the unction of the sick are revealed as sacraments that surround the body, destined to die with the promise of resurrection. The Church identifies with Christ's body, a social body in constant rebirth. In this fundamental essay about the healing of the body, Christelle Javary covers every aspect of the phenomenon for Christians today: a fascinating new reading of the Gospel, but also an analysis of miraculous healing at Lourdes, the phenomenon of healing in charismatic prayer groups, the relation between sickness and sin, between healing and grace in the case of inner healing and the status of the body in liturgy.
